The NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round gives eligible candidates one final MCC opportunity to compete for vacant medical seats after Round 3. MCC has scheduled the 2026 online stray round from 12 to 26 October 2026. Registration opens on October 12, choice filling starts on the same day, the result comes on October 17, and allotted candidates must report from October 19.

A vacant MBBS seat can look like a last-minute opportunity, but the round follows strict rules. Read the dates, eligibility conditions, registration process, choice filling rules, seat allotment process and reporting requirements before making a choice.

What Is the NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round?

The MCC stray round functions as the fourth online round of UG counselling. MCC conducts it after Round 3 to fill eligible vacant seats. The 2026 counselling scheme covers vacant seats from the relevant MCC counselling pools, including 15% All India Quota seats and 100% Deemed University seats, along with the institutions covered under the MCC UG scheme.

This round differs from the earlier rounds because MCC requires candidates to complete fresh registration and fresh choice filling. MCC also shares allotment data with central and state authorities to prevent a candidate from securing multiple seats through overlapping counselling processes.

The round carries greater risk than an ordinary preference exercise. MCC states that a candidate who receives a stray-round seat must join the allotted college. Failure to join leads to security-deposit forfeiture and removes the candidate from further counselling, if any.

NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round Eligibility: Who Can Apply?

MCC’s 2026 information bulletin clearly identifies who cannot enter the stray round. A candidate can participate when the candidate has qualified NEET UG and does not fall into any of MCC’s exclusion categories.

A candidate cannot participate when:

  1. The candidate does not register for the stray vacancy round.
  2. The candidate holds or has joined any seat when the stray round starts.
  3. MCC allotted a seat to the candidate in Round 3 and the candidate did not report to the allotted institute.

Candidates who do not fall into these categories remain eligible under the MCC rules.

MCC also states that a candidate who received a Round 3 seat and did not report gets eliminated from further rounds. A candidate who receives a Round 3 seat should treat that allotment seriously rather than assume the stray round will provide another opportunity.

Candidates should also remember the data-sharing rule. MCC checks candidate allotment data with Centre and State counselling authorities before processing the stray round. A candidate whose name appears in the relevant allotted-candidate data gets removed from the MCC stray process.

How to Complete NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round Registration

MCC requires fresh registration for the stray round. Candidates cannot simply carry forward their earlier choice list.

The process follows this sequence:

Step-1: Visit the official MCC website and enter the UG counselling section.

Step-2: Complete fresh registration during the 12–14 October 2026 window.

Step-3: Pay the required counselling fee and security deposit.

Step-4: Check the available seats and college information.

Step-5: Build a realistic preference list before submitting choices.

Step-6: Submit and lock choices within the prescribed window.

The MCC bulletin lists a non-refundable registration fee of ₹1,000 for UR/EWS candidates and ₹500 for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates for 15% AIQ and specified central institutions. Deemed University participation carries a ₹5,000 registration fee and ₹2,00,000 refundable security deposit. Candidates should verify the amount displayed by MCC during fresh registration before payment.

NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round Choice Filling and Locking

Choice filling can decide whether a candidate converts a vacancy into an MBBS admission. MCC opens choice filling from 12 October to 15 October 2026, with the final choice-filling deadline at 10:00 AM on October 15. Choice locking starts at 4:00 PM on October 14 and closes at 10:00 AM on October 15.

Candidates should rank colleges according to genuine preference. A stray-round candidate should not add a college only because it shows a vacant seat. Check the course, college, fee structure, bond conditions, location and other institute-specific details before locking.

MCC specifically advises candidates to use its College Information section and the participating college’s official website for details such as fees, bonds, course conditions and other admission requirements. MCC also warns candidates against relying on third-party websites for this information.

NEET UG Stray Vacancy Seat Allotment 2026: How Will It Work?

MCC processes the NEET UG Stray Vacancy Seat Allotment after choice submission and locking. The allotment follows the counselling system’s merit and preference rules. MCC then publishes the result on its official website.

The 2026 schedule places seat-allotment processing on 15 and 16 October, with the result scheduled for 17 October.

Candidates should download the allotment result and allotment letter from MCC after the final result. The MCC bulletin requires allotted candidates to join the allotted college within the reporting period. MCC advises candidates to contact the allotted institute quickly because colleges may need time to complete admission formalities.

NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round MBBS Seats: How Many Are Available?

The biggest question remains the number of NEET UG Stray Vacancy Round MBBS Seats.

MCC has not published the final 2026 stray-round seat matrix yet as of 5 October 2026. The official MCC UG page currently lists the Round 3 final allotment result along with Round 3 newly added, virtual-vacancy and clear-vacancy documents.

MCC’s counselling bulletin explains that the stray round fills vacant seats remaining from Round 3 and applicable Deemed University seats. The exact college-wise and category-wise vacancies depend on the final vacancy data after Round 3.

The National Medical Commission has also published an MBBS seat matrix for the 2026–27 academic year as on 18 September 2026. That document gives the recognised undergraduate seat position, not the final MCC stray-round vacancy count.

Candidates should use the NMC official College and Course Search to verify recognised MBBS colleges and intake information.

What Happens After NEET UG Stray Vacancy Seat Allotment?

A successful allotment starts the final admission step. MCC’s 2026 rules require candidates with stray-round allotments to join the allotted seat. A candidate who does not join loses the security deposit and cannot take part in further rounds, if any.

Keep the original documents ready for college reporting. MCC lists the allotment letter, NTA admit card, NEET result or rank letter, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and marksheet, photographs, identity proof and applicable category certificates among the documents required for reporting.

The official MCC schedule gives candidates 19–26 October 2026 for reporting. MCC does not allow an extension of the joining date.
