Marine Biology After 12th: Courses, Colleges, Field Jobs

Marine biology after 12th showing a marine biologist conducting underwater research near a boat.

Introduction

India has a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres, exclusive economic zone rights over 2.02 million square kilometres of ocean, and some of the world’s richest marine biodiversity — from coral reefs in Lakshadweep to mangroves in the Sundarbans. Yet marine biology remains one of the most under-chosen science careers for students after 12th.

If you are fascinated by the ocean, marine life, coral reefs, or underwater ecosystems — and you have a science background — marine biology and marine sciences offer a deeply rewarding career pathway backed by India’s growing investment in ocean research.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, is the apex body overseeing ocean science research in India, including through its institutes like the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) and the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR). The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) oversees marine fisheries research through the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), established in 1947.

What Is Marine Biology?

Marine biology is the scientific study of organisms that live in the ocean and other saltwater environments — their biology, ecology, behaviour, evolution, and interaction with the physical environment. It is an interdisciplinary field encompassing zoology, botany, ecology, chemistry, physics, and geology as they apply to marine environments.

Marine biologists may study:

  • Marine fish, mammals, invertebrates, and microorganisms
  • Coral reef ecology and biodiversity
  • Marine pollution and environmental impact
  • Fisheries science and sustainable harvesting
  • Deep-sea ecosystems and oceanography
  • Climate change impacts on marine ecosystems

UG Courses You Can Pursue After 12th

Most universities in India offer marine biology at the postgraduate (MSc) level, with BSc programmes in related fields being the recommended undergraduate pathway.

BSc Marine Biology / BSc Marine Sciences — Direct UG Options

Several universities offer a direct BSc in Marine Biology or Marine Sciences after 12th:

Eligibility: 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB), minimum 50–55% aggregate, from a recognised board.

Directly available UG programmes include:

Institution Programme Type
Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) BSc Marine Biology State University (Kerala)
Andhra University BSc Marine Biology and Fisheries Science State University (Andhra Pradesh)
Pondicherry University BSc/MSc Marine Sciences Central University
Goa University BSc Marine Sciences State University
Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) BSc Marine Biology State University (Kerala)
University of Mumbai BSc Life Sciences (Marine Biology Specialisation) State University

The ICAR Route: Fisheries Science UG Programmes

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) oversees fisheries science education through its network of fisheries colleges. The ICAR – All India Entrance Examination for Admission (AIEEA-UG) is the national entrance exam for admission to BSc (Fisheries) programmes at ICAR-affiliated agricultural and fisheries universities.

BSc (Fisheries) is a 4-year degree that covers aquaculture, marine fisheries, fish biology, fisheries economics, and marine ecology — making it one of the most comprehensive marine science UG degrees available after 12th.

Key ICAR-affiliated fisheries universities/colleges:

  • Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU), Nagapattinam
  • Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi
  • Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU)
  • College of Fisheries, Mangalore (under Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University)

ICAR-CMFRI: India’s Premier Marine Research Institution

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), established by the Government of India on 3 February 1947, is headquartered in Kochi, Kerala, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. It is one of the world’s leading tropical marine fisheries research institutes.

CMFRI undertakes research in marine finfish farming, biotechnology, biodiversity, marine ecology, and socioeconomics of fisheries. It also offers:

  • Internship for postgraduate students — subject to ICAR guidelines, PG students can carry out short-term research programmes or internships at CMFRI
  • Project Internship Programme — listed under CMFRI’s HRD Cell for students and young researchers
  • Need-based training programmes for researchers, students, academicians, and farmers on marine fisheries and mariculture
  • Recognition as a PhD research centre — CMFRI is recognised by various universities for PhD research; students with UGC-JRF, DST-INSPIRE, and CSIR fellowships can pursue doctoral research here
