The IIM Ahmedabad admission criteria for 2027–29 introduce a revised shortlisting framework for CAT 2026 applicants. The institute will evaluate CAT performance, Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation scores, work experience and gender diversity through a composite-score system. Candidates must understand the category-wise cutoffs, Application Rating and final selection weightage to plan their MBA admission strategy effectively.

What Changed in IIM Ahmedabad Admission Criteria for CAT 2026?

IIM Ahmedabad has changed the initial shortlisting method for its two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP). The official admission policy for the 2027–29 batch explains the revised process.

The previous 2026–28 shortlisting framework used separate selection routes for academic-category groups, including specific Class 10, Class 12 and undergraduate performance requirements. The 2027–29 policy instead calculates a raw composite score using the candidate’s CAT percentile and Application Rating, normalises the score within the candidate’s undergraduate discipline, and applies the published CAT cutoffs.

The important points are:

  • CAT and Application Rating: CAT performance contributes 65% and the normalised Application Rating contributes 35% to the raw composite score.
  • Academic profile: Class 10, Class 12 and undergraduate marks contribute to the Application Rating.
  • Discipline-wise normalisation: IIMA adjusts the raw composite score using the performance of applicants within the same undergraduate discipline.
  • Final selection: PI, AWT and the normalised composite score determine the final selection score.

The 65:35 weighting continues from the previous shortlisting framework. The revised approach changes the structure used to evaluate candidates before the AWT and PI stage. (Official 2026–28 criteria)

IIM Ahmedabad CAT 2026 Cutoff: Category-Wise Minimum Percentiles

The official IIM Ahmedabad CAT cutoff 2026 category wise table specifies minimum overall and sectional percentiles. Candidates must meet the relevant thresholds in VARC, DILR and QA, along with the overall percentile requirement.

Category Non-PwD: Overall Non-PwD: Each Section PwD: Overall PwD: Each Section
General / EWS 95 85 85 75
NC-OBC 90 80 80 70
SC 85 75 75 65
ST 75 65 65 55

Source: IIM Ahmedabad Admission Policy for PGP 2027–29, Table 4. The sectional percentile applies separately to VARC, DILR and QA.

These figures represent the minimum CAT screening cutoffs. They do not represent the actual percentile of every candidate who receives an interview call.

What CAT percentile is required for IIM Ahmedabad?

A General-category, non-PwD candidate must meet the published minimum of 95 overall and 85 in each section. A candidate who misses even one required sectional cutoff fails to meet the minimum CAT screening requirements.

Meeting all the cutoffs does not guarantee shortlisting. IIMA also evaluates the composite score and applies discipline-wise normalisation. The admission committee may revise the published cutoffs if it considers a change necessary.

Candidates can use Career Plan B’s guide to CAT sectional cutoffs and why overall percentile alone is not enough to understand how sectional performance affects MBA shortlisting.

Revised Shortlisting Criteria: CAT Percentile and Application Rating

The IIM Ahmedabad selection criteria assign 65% weight to the CAT component and 35% to the normalised Application Rating when calculating the raw composite score.

The formula is:

Raw Composite Score = 0.35 × Normalised AR + 0.65 × (CAT Total Percentile/100)

The institute first calculates the raw Application Rating, then normalises it using the average of the top 50 Application Rating scores across the applicant pool.

How does the IIM Ahmedabad Application Rating score work?

The Application Rating considers five components.

Component How IIMA Awards Points
Class 10 Marks Up to 10 points
Class 12 Marks Up to 10 points
Undergraduate Marks Up to 10 points
Full-time Work Experience Up to 5 points
Gender Diversity 3 points for non-male candidates

IIMA applies the following rating scale to Class 10, Class 12 and undergraduate marks:

Percentage of Marks Rating Points for Each Academic Component
55% or below 1
Above 55% to 60% 2
Above 60% to 70% 3
Above 70% to 80% 5
Above 80% to 90% 8
Above 90% 10

For full-time work experience, IIMA awards zero points for less than 12 months. Candidates with 12–36 months receive 0.20 points for each month beyond the first 11 months. Candidates with more than 36 months receive five points.

IIMA awards three gender-diversity points to non-male candidates and zero to male candidates. The institute adds the rating points to calculate the raw Application Rating.

What this means for applicants: Strong CAT performance matters, but academic records and eligible work experience also influence shortlisting. Candidates should review their marks and employment details carefully while completing the CAT application.

How Discipline-Wise Normalisation Works

IIM Ahmedabad groups applicants by their undergraduate discipline before calculating the normalised composite score. The policy includes fields such as Engineering and Technology, Commerce, Economics, Arts and Humanities, Law, Medicine, Computer Science and IT, and Pure Sciences.

The institute uses this formula:

Normalised Composite Score = Raw Composite Score / Average of the top 1% of raw scores in the discipline

IIMA considers a minimum of five and a maximum of 100 scores in the top 1% reference group, depending on the number of applicants in that discipline.

This method compares applicants against a discipline-specific reference group. It does not guarantee an advantage to graduates from any particular field.

Final Selection Criteria: PI, AWT and Normalised Composite Score

Candidates who receive an AWT and PI invitation enter the next stage of the IIM Ahmedabad admission process. The institute calculates a Final Composite Score after these assessments.

Final Selection Component Weightage
Personal Interview (PI) 50%
Analytical Writing Test (AWT) 10%
Normalised Composite Score 40%

The official formula is:

Final Composite Score = 0.50(Normalised PI) + 0.10(Normalised AWT) + 0.40(Normalised Composite Score)

The 40% component includes the normalised score from the earlier shortlisting process, which accounts for CAT performance and Application Rating. IIMA makes final offers according to the Final Composite Score and category-wise selection requirements.

Candidates should prepare for both the analytical writing test and the personal interview. IIMA may assess academic understanding, communication, work experience, extracurricular achievements and other relevant attributes during the selection process.

Have Any Doubts?

Does Meeting the CAT Cutoff Guarantee Shortlisting?

No. Meeting the minimum IIM Ahmedabad CAT cutoff does not guarantee an AWT–PI invitation or final admission.

Candidates must satisfy the applicable eligibility and CAT cutoff requirements. IIMA calculates their composite scores, normalises those scores within their undergraduate disciplines and creates the shortlist. Performance in the AWT and PI then affects the final selection score.

Candidates should aim for strong overall and sectional CAT percentiles while maintaining a strong academic profile. Reviewing how academic marks affect IIM admission can help applicants understand the role of their school and graduation marks.
