CUET UG Political Science: Pataliputra or Patna University?

Career Plan B cover comparing Patna University and Pataliputra University for CUET UG Political Science.

Introduction

So your CUET UG results are out — or they’re coming soon — and you’ve narrowed things down to Political Science. Great choice. But now comes the question that’s making you (and maybe your parents) lose sleep: Pataliputra University or Patna University? Both are in Patna, both offer BA (Hons) in Political Science, and both accept CUET UG scores. So what actually sets them apart?

Here’s the thing — choosing between these two is less about which one “sounds better” and more about which one fits you better. In this blog, we’re breaking down everything — admission process, faculty, campus life, fees, and career scope — so that by the time you finish reading, you feel confident about your decision. No fluff, just the real picture.

Understanding CUET UG Political Science — What Does Your Score Actually Mean?

Before we dive into the comparison, let’s quickly clear up how CUET scores work for Political Science admissions in Bihar.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) score is used for admission into UG programmes in Central Universities and participating universities — including state and deemed universities — across the country. So yes, both Patna University and Pataliputra University fall under this umbrella as participating institutions.

Your CUET UG Political Science score determines where your name appears on the merit list. A higher score gives you more options and a better shot at getting into the college of your choice within the university. But here’s something many students miss — both universities also have their own internal admission routes and merit processes. So even if your CUET score is not sky-high, you’re not automatically out of the race.

One more thing to keep in mind: the cutoff varies every year depending on the number of applicants, seat availability, and category. So don’t compare last year’s cutoff as a gospel truth — treat it as a rough indicator.

Patna University Political Science — The Legacy Choice

History & Reputation

If you’ve grown up in Bihar, you’ve probably heard the name Patna University more times than you can count. And there’s a reason for that.

Patna University was established in the year 1917 and is one of the oldest universities in the country. In Bihar it is the first, and in the subcontinent, it is the seventh oldest University. That’s over 100 years of academic history — which means its name carries real weight on a resume, especially in Bihar and across India.

The university is NAAC-accredited with a B+ grade and is ranked among the top 51–100 state universities in the NIRF 2024 rankings, making it the only institution in Bihar to achieve such recognition.

Academically, Patna University offers an impressive range of programs through its 31 departments, 3 institutes, and 10 constituent colleges. The Political Science department, in particular, has been a cornerstone of its Humanities faculty for decades.

Admission Process via CUET UG

Patna University BA admission is based on CUET UG or merit in the qualifying examination. The eligibility criteria for BA admission is 10+2 with minimum 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC).

You can apply through the official portal at pup.ac.in. The university releases multiple merit lists, and students are allotted colleges based on their scores and college preferences.

Application fee: ₹1,100 (General) | ₹700 (Reserved categories)

A quick tip: Keep an eye on the official website for merit list dates, as seats fill up fast — especially for Political Science Honours.

Faculty & Curriculum

Patna University’s Political Science department follows the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) and has now moved to a four-year degree programme under NEP 2020. The curriculum covers Political Theory, Indian Government and Politics, International Relations, Public Administration, and Comparative Politics — a solid foundation whether you want to crack UPSC or pursue a master’s later.

Several of its postgraduate departments have celebrated over 75 years of their establishment, further cementing the university’s reputation as a centre of advanced learning.

Campus Life & Facilities

The campus of Patna University sits right on the banks of the Ganges — and honestly, that alone is something. The heritage buildings, the library, the college grounds — there’s a certain energy here that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it.

The fully automated library of Patna University has a collection exceeding 2,36,000 books, including 1,00,000 unique titles and 5,436 rare manuscripts. For a Political Science student who loves to research and read, this is gold.

The university also has hostels, sports facilities, NCC/NSS wings, and a health centre.

Placements & Career Scope

Since its inception, over 1,000 companies have taken part in the university placements drive. Top recruiters include ITC Group, Futures Group, Wipro, and Azim Premji Foundation.

According to the NIRF 2025 report, Patna University placements 2024 recorded 194 students being placed, with the median package standing at ₹3.70 LPA. For UG students, that’s a decent starting point — and most Political Science graduates use the degree as a launchpad into UPSC, law, or postgraduate studies rather than direct campus placements.

Pataliputra University Political Science — The New Age Option

Overview & Growth

Pataliputra University is the newer of the two, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s less serious.

Pataliputra University, Patna was established on 18th March, 2018, by the order of the Government of Bihar. In just about seven years, it has built up a solid network of affiliated colleges across Patna and Nalanda districts.

The university has control over 25 constituent colleges, two government girls colleges, three minority colleges, and a number of affiliated colleges.

What’s interesting about PPU is that it was carved out specifically to ease the load on Patna University’s vast network — so many colleges that were previously affiliated with PU now fall under PPU. This actually means students at PPU-affiliated colleges get more administrative attention and a tighter-knit university experience.

The official website for all updates, results, and admissions is ppup.ac.in.

Admission Process via CUET UG

PPU’s UG admission is based on merit — either board exam scores or CUET UG scores. The application process is online through their dedicated portal at admission.ppuponline.in.

PPU admission is granted based on both the applicant’s merit and their scores on relevant entrance examinations. Patliputra University registration fee ranges from INR 400 to 600, depending on the level of the course.

The university releases 4–5 merit lists, and there’s also an open merit list (the final round) for students who didn’t make it in earlier rounds. Patliputra University’s open merit list is the university’s fourth and final merit list — in this instance, candidates are assessed for admission based on their college preference and previous qualifying examination results.

Note: A 2% deduction is made from the prior qualifying examination result for each gap year — so if you’re applying after a year’s gap, keep this in mind.

Faculty & Curriculum

PPU’s Political Science department is headed by faculty who are actively involved in academics. The Head of the Political Science department at Patliputra University is Dr. Viresh Kumar Singh.

The BA (Hons) at Patliputra University follows CBCS and is structured as a four-year programme with eight semesters. The syllabus broadly mirrors standard UGC guidelines and covers core Political Science subjects including Indian Constitution, International Relations, Political Theory, and Comparative Government.

Campus Life & Infrastructure

PPU is still building its identity, and that’s actually exciting if you’re someone who wants to be part of a growing institution. The affiliated colleges under PPU are spread across Patna and Nalanda, so the campus experience depends a lot on which college within PPU you’re allotted to.

Colleges like A.N. College and College of Commerce, Arts & Science are well-established institutions under PPU’s umbrella and offer decent infrastructure. For Political Science students, the experience on the ground is closely tied to the individual college — so do your research on the specific college before confirming admission.

Career Opportunities & Alumni

PPU is relatively new, so it doesn’t yet have the deep alumni network that Patna University has built over a century. That said, Political Science graduates from PPU-affiliated colleges are increasingly appearing in UPSC, State PSC, and law entrance exams — and doing well.

The university actively encourages participation in seminars, inter-college debates, and academic events, which is actually great for a Political Science student — these are the spaces where you develop the confidence and communication skills that matter most in this field.

Which University Should You Choose?

Choose Patna University if

  • You want a degree with legacy recognition — especially if you plan to sit for UPSC, go into law, or pursue academic research where university reputation plays a role.
  • You love the idea of a heritage campus, a massive library, and a vibrant student culture built over decades.
  • You’re aiming for postgraduate studies (MA Political Science or LLB) and want the PU name to carry weight.
  • Your CUET score is competitive enough to land a seat in one of PU’s better-known colleges like Patna College or Magadh Mahila College.

Ask yourself: Does the history and recognition of the institution matter to my long-term goal?

Choose Pataliputra University if

  • You want more seat availability and a slightly less cutthroat competition for admission.
  • You are okay with a newer institution and are comfortable building your own path independently — through competitive exams, self-study, and internships.
  • You live in areas closer to Nalanda or outskirts of Patna, and a PPU-affiliated college is more accessible for you.
  • The lower application fee and relatively simpler admission process suit your timeline.

Political Science Career Scope — Is It Worth It in 2026?

A lot of students (and their parents) still wonder: “What will you DO with Political Science?” Fair question. Let’s answer it properly.

The scope of Political Science is genuinely wide — it’s not just a subject you study for UPSC (though it helps a lot there). Here’s a look at what you can do after your BA:

Civil Services (UPSC & State PSC) Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) is one of the most popular optional subjects for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, with almost 60–70% of the UPSC General Studies Paper II (Polity & Governance) covered in a standard Political Science degree. So if IAS, IPS, or IFS is your dream, you’re already studying the right thing.

Law BA Political Science pairs beautifully with law (LLB/LLM). Understanding the Indian Constitution, governance, and political theory gives you a strong base for constitutional law, public interest litigation, and legal research.

Journalism & Media Students with BA (Hons) in Political Science can pursue jobs in journalism and media, such as political journalism, international desk/reporting, correspondents, political analysts, and editors. In today’s media landscape, someone who understands why something is happening politically is worth far more than someone who just reports what happened.

Policy Research & Think Tanks Political Science and IR graduates get opportunities in various think tanks, NGOs, policy research organisations, and institutions like NITI Aayog, IDSA, and ORF. NGOs like UNICEF hire policy analysts and other similar job roles.

Academia If you love the subject, an MA followed by UGC-NET can open the door to teaching and research at the university level — a stable and respected career path.

Starting Salaries? Entry-level salaries range from ₹3–7 lakhs per annum, depending on sector and location. And for those who crack civil services? The packages, perks, and job security are in a completely different league.
