These questions sound simple. Most candidates answer them poorly because they prepare generic, rehearsed answers that panelists see through immediately. A bad answer mentions prestige and brand without any specifics.
Area 2: Academic Questions
Expect questions on your Class 12 subjects, particularly Mathematics and Economics if you took them. Panelists probe whether candidates actually understood what they studied or merely memorised it for the board exam.
For Mathematics students, questions may cover concepts from calculus, algebra, or statistics applied to simple real-world scenarios. For Commerce students, accounting principles, demand-supply concepts, and basic economics are fair game. The Science students, the panel may ask you to explain physics or chemistry concepts in a management context.
The standard is not deep expertise. It is genuine understanding. A candidate who explains a concept clearly in their own words consistently impresses more than one who recites a textbook definition and freezes when asked for a follow-up.
Area 3: General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Panelists test awareness of recent events and business trends. This is not a GK quiz. It is an assessment of whether the candidate is intellectually engaged with the world outside their exam preparation.
Specific areas that recur in IPMAT PI feedback from recent years include: major economic policy developments in India, recent RBI decisions on interest rates, significant business news such as major acquisitions or company developments, environmental and sustainability topics, and current geopolitical events with economic implications.
Reading one credible business newspaper or its digital equivalent every day for six to eight weeks before the PI is the minimum preparation benchmark. The Economic Times, Mint, and Business Standard are the most relevant sources. Reading headlines alone is insufficient. Understanding the business implications of each major story is what the panel probes.
Area 4: Situational and Ethical Questions
These questions separate the most competitive candidates from the rest. They present an ambiguous scenario and ask what the candidate would do.
Examples include: You are a manager and discover your best performer is falsifying data. What do you do? You have been asked to cut costs in your team but doing so will require laying off a loyal employee. How do you approach this? A company you admire is found to be polluting a river. Would you still join them?
There are no correct answers to these questions. Panelists are assessing reasoning quality, ethical awareness, and the ability to hold multiple considerations simultaneously without collapsing into a simplistic response. Candidates who say what they think the panel wants to hear tend to underperform. Candidates who reason clearly, acknowledge trade-offs, and commit to a defensible position consistently perform better.
WAT: Which Institutions Use It and What It Tests
IIM Indore’s IPMAT process does not include a WAT. The selection is purely IPMAT score plus PI.
However, IIM Rohtak and several other IPMAT-accepting institutions do use a WAT or equivalent written component as part of their selection process. TAPMI’s selection process also includes a written component. If you are applying to multiple IPMAT-accepting institutions, verify each institution’s current admission process on their official website before preparing.
For institutions that do conduct WAT, the format is a short essay of 200 to 300 words on a given topic within 20 to 30 minutes. Topics tend to be business, social, or ethical in nature. Common WAT themes include technology and society, entrepreneurship in India, sustainability, the role of management education, and ethical business practices.
Five WAT principles that work:
- Take a clear position. A WAT that argues both sides and reaches no conclusion performs poorly. State your position in the first paragraph and defend it.
- Structure before writing. Spend the first three to four minutes outlining your argument. A poorly structured essay written quickly is harder to evaluate than a well-structured essay that uses slightly simpler language.
- Use specific examples. A general assertion that “technology has changed business” is weak. A specific reference to how fintech has changed credit access for India’s unbanked population is strong.
- Write to your word limit. A 150-word response to a 300-word prompt signals either poor preparation or poor time management. Both are negatives.
- Avoid passive voice and clichés. “It is believed that…” and “In today’s rapidly changing world…” are signals that weaken academic writing. State claims directly.

Most candidates prepare for IPMAT PI by reading a list of common questions and memorising answers. That preparation level is insufficient for IIM-level panels.

Prepare current affairs as business stories, not news items. Do not memorise headlines. Understand implications. Dress formally and test your technology setup in advance. For online PIs, a stable internet connection, a clean neutral background, proper lighting, and formal attire are not optional.
